MCP Servers: Where to Find API Keys for External Providers

If an MCP server asks for an API key, you need to generate that key from the third-party service that provides the data or tools for that server. The exact steps depend on the provider you use.

We do not issue or manage API keys for external providers such as CoinMarketCap, DefiLlama, CryptoNews API, CryptoQuant, and Tavily. API key creation, permissions, pricing, and availability are controlled by each provider and may change over time.

How to get an API key for an MCP server

  1. Identify which external provider the MCP server uses, such as CoinMarketCap, DefiLlama, CryptoNews API, CryptoQuant, or Tavily.

  2. Open the provider’s official website or API documentation.

  3. Sign in or create an account with that provider, if required.

  4. Generate an API key from your provider account or developer settings.

  5. Copy the API key and paste it into the MCP server configuration field.

  6. Save your changes and test the connection.

Important:

  • API keys for MCP servers come from the external provider, not from us.

  • Some providers offer free API access, while others require a paid plan, trial, or approval. DefiLlama’s site, for example, distinguishes between public API access and Pro/API plans.

  • Available endpoints, permissions, and rate limits depend on the provider.

  • Provider setup steps may change without notice, so always check the provider’s latest official documentation.

FAQ

Where do I find the API key page?

Go to the provider’s official API documentation, developer portal, or account settings page. If the provider recently changed its interface, use the provider’s own help resources.

Why is my API key not working?

Check that:

  • the key was copied fully

  • the correct plan or API access is enabled

  • the provider has granted access to the required endpoints

  • the key was pasted into the correct MCP server field

Why is the provider asking me to upgrade?

Some providers require a paid plan for API access or higher rate limits. This is controlled by the provider, not by us. DefiLlama’s documentation, for example, points users to Pro/API plans for additional access.
